- Accessible Information Standard
- The rule that services must find out, record and meet people's communication needs, such as needing large print or an interpreter.
- Advocate
- Someone who helps a person say what they want, which may be a friend, relative or an independent advocate.
- Best interests
- The way a decision is made for someone who cannot make it themselves, based on what is right for them.
- Capacity
- Being able to make a particular decision at a particular time.
- Co-production
- Involving the people who use a service in deciding how the service itself is run.
- Gillick competence
- The test of whether a young person under 16 understands enough to consent to their own treatment.
- Montgomery standard
- A Supreme Court decision meaning patients must be told about the risks that matter to them personally.
- Person-centred care
- Care built around the individual person and what matters to them, rather than around the condition or the appointment.
- Reasonable adjustment
- A change made so a disabled person is not put at a disadvantage, such as a longer appointment or a ground-floor room.
- Regulation 9
- The part of the CQC regulations requiring care to suit the person and reflect their preferences.
- Shared decision-making
- The clinician and the person deciding together, rather than the clinician deciding alone.
